My Top 5 Tips For Getting The New Year Started Right
Now that the new year is here and you’ve made your new year’s resolutions, you’re probably wondering “now what?” It’s easy to make resolutions, of course, but it’s so hard to keep them. May I suggest that you start the year with an examination of your past, present and future rather than just making resolutions? Here are my top five tips on how you can get your new year started right and hopefully stay on track:
1. Examine past pain so you can release it. To move forward, you must look back on 2014 and figure out what may have been holding you back from achieving your full potential. Perhaps it was a disgruntled lover who made it difficult for you to focus on work. Now you’re getting pulled into the office by the boss and being questioned about your work performance. Sometimes people or things can hold us back in ways we don’t realize. That’s why it’s important to reflect a bit and see what’s holding you back from your full potential. If someone or something is not uplifting you, release it so you can move forward to better things in your life.
2. Examine past successes so you can succeed again. Not only should you focus on the negative things that happened to you in 2014, you should also focus on the good things that happened to you. Ask yourself what good things happened to you in 2014 and why they occurred. What circumstances around your situation made for these great things to happen? Are these things still around? What can you do to bring success your way once again into 2015? How can you improve your chances for success in 2015? Once you’ve figured this out, go for greatness again -- but this time with even greater force and passion.
3. Move carefully through the present. As you progress through the new year, take things one step at a time. Remember Rome wasn’t built in a day. Try to make the most of each day while working towards your goals. The most important thing is to live every moment deliberately, not as if you’re on autopilot. Be present and in charge of your life in every moment so you can make the most of it.
4. Get a glimpse of the future to avoid obstacles that could derail you. It's okay to get help or advice from someone who can help you prepare for the future by better understanding it. Whether it’s a spiritual advisor, a financial advisor, a trusted coach or a wise friend, getting good insight from others may better prepare you for the future. It helps to have someone on your side instead of looking at and facing things alone. And sometimes someone from the outside can point out things you may be missing so you can have more success and better meet your goals.
5. Make a plan for reaching long-term goals. What are your goals for the future? And are you taking steps to make sure that you get there? This year, take the initiative to work toward your long-term goals. This means having easily achievable short-term goals as progress markers too. Choose a journal and document your goals and progress if you think it will help. Laying things out on paper and looking over them every day can do wonders for helping you reach your goals.
Need extra help? Here’s a great worksheet you can download from lifecoachonthego.com that may be able to help you reach your goals: http://lifecoachonthego.com/wordpress/wp-content/uploads/2014/12/LCOGF057-2015-Goal-Setting-Funsheet.pdf
I hope you’ll take my advice. Then, a year from now look back and reevaluate your progress to see if you’ve come further than in previous years.
If this plan works for you, why not repeat it every year? You deserve the best possible life, and you can have a better life than ever before if you take these five tips to heart.
Sincerely,
