Adults Coloring Books Can Relax You And Take You Back

Adults Coloring Books Can Relax You And Take You Back

Recently, I decided to see what all the hype is about with adult coloring books. Have you seen or heard about them? I couldn't help but notice that the adult coloring book section at my local Books-A-Million store keeps getting bigger and bigger.

At first, I thought it was very childish for an adult to be coloring. But one day, I decided to check out the adult coloring books anyway. I was actually very impressed with many of the books and the intricate pictures in them. The pictures didn't look like the cheesy, simplistic images that you might find in a children's coloring book. The pictures seemed complex and very beautifully detailed. I could see that you wouldn't just be sitting there for a few minutes coloring the page. Some of them would actually take you days or even weeks to finish.

I was still skeptical about having to pay $15 for a coloring book though, so after my initial scan through the section I decided to walk away.

I Couldn’t Get Them Out Of My Mind

But I kept going back to the section every time I went to the bookstore. I finally decided to scrape up some change and buy me one of the $15 coloring books. I kept second-guessing myself and asking myself why I was wasting money. But I knew I’d have to give it a try if I wanted to know what all the hype was about.

I bought "Doodlers Anonymous Epic Coloring Book", then I went to the dollar store and bought me some colored pencils. That night after the kids went to bed, I decided to have a glass of wine and color in one of the pages of my adult coloring book. It wasn't long after I started coloring that I realized how relaxing it was. It was like my mind was quiet. And all I could think about was staying in the lines -- not about the laundry, not about the bills, just about me, the coloring book and the pencils.

I was shocked that four hours later, I had spent most of the night trying to finish my coloring page. I just got lost in the coloring, and that was okay. I was at peace and my mind had been quiet all that time.

In that moment, I could finally see what all the hype was about.

A Return To A Simpler, Carefree Time

Coloring as an adult sort of takes you back to your childhood when you had no real fears or worries. The only thing that mattered when you were coloring as a child was creating a beautiful picture. Wouldn’t it be great if you could recapture some of the innocence of youth?

My adult coloring book allowed me to recapture that worry-free feeling as an adult. And these days, I’m much more appreciative of this serene moment in time -- so much so, in fact, that I ended up buying me another adult coloring book called "Grimm Fairy Tales". And I got a couple of coloring books for my friends. Not long ago, I had a coloring book party with my girlfriends. I enjoyed seeing their reactions as they too enjoyed a few minutes of relaxation. I could feel the calming and relaxing effect that coloring had on our minds, bodies and souls.

Have you heard that you should put away childish things? Maybe. But some things children do are great for adults too. Coloring isn't just for kids anymore, and adult coloring books are a great way to quiet your mind during the storms of life.

Why not take a moment to look over the adult coloring books at a store near you and see if there’s one you like? I suggest you get a coloring book that fits your personality and start with a picture that seems really fun. Then pick a quiet place and time when you don’t have anything you have to do. Don't look at the clock, and don't worry about the bills. Just let your mind escape into the colorful world of adult coloring books.

Still skeptical about paying $15 for a coloring book like I was? Post a comment below telling me how you find a few moments of peace and you’ll be entered to win one of two coloring books that I’m giving away to clients.

Good Luck and Happy Coloring!
